  • Retail-investor framing. Talk like a regulator, not a Reddit trader.
  • Weak on consultation papers. They are the panel's favourite territory.
  • Vague ‘why SEBI' answer. Have a specific hook — an order, a paper, a mandate.
  • Ignoring enforcement. Investigation and adjudication are core work.
  • Number bluffing. Do not quote FPI figures you are not sure of.

How different is SEBI Grade A from RBI Grade B in interview?
SEBI leans heavily on capital markets, corporate governance and enforcement, whereas RBI leans on monetary policy, financial stability and banking regulation. The register at both is technical, but SEBI panels probe recent orders and consultation papers unusually deeply.
Do I need trading experience?
No. In fact, framing yourself as a retail trader is often counterproductive. What helps is understanding market mechanisms, regulations and the reasoning behind SEBI's recent interventions — from a regulator's perspective, not a punter's.
How current do current affairs need to be?
The last twelve months, with granular knowledge of every major SEBI action in the last three to six months. Panels notice when your reading stopped before a big consultation paper or enforcement order.
How should I answer ‘why SEBI'?
Anchor in a real interest — market integrity, investor protection, disclosure regime — and tie it to a specific SEBI action or paper that you find compelling. Salary and prestige framings do not survive follow-up in a room of regulators.
