SBI PO Interview: Group Exercise Plus Panel Round

After clearing SBI PO Mains, candidates face a Group Exercise and personal interview. SBI weights this stage more heavily than IBPS and uses it to assess presence, argumentation and cultural fit with the country's largest bank. Format and weightage

The Group Exercise typically carries 20 marks and the interview 30, for a total of 50. The final score usually combines Mains and this stage in a 75:25 ratio. That is a heavier interview weight than most PSU exams, and the reason SBI selections often reshuffle the Mains ranking.

The GE is not a group discussion in the classroom sense. It is a structured exercise where six to ten candidates get a business or social scenario and are asked to arrive at a group position within eight to ten minutes. Panels observe who initiates, who summarises, who listens and who blocks.

Interview themes

  • Why SBI over IBPS-allotted banks. A real answer beats a flattering one.
  • Banking awareness and current affairs — same territory as IBPS but with a slight tilt toward SBI's own initiatives (YONO, digital lending, wealth management, international presence).
  • HR and situational: handling an angry customer, missing cash at branch close, a colleague on a personal call during peak hours.

Preparing for GE and interview

  • Practise GE topics with a peer group of five to eight. Rotate roles — initiator, contributor, summariser — so you can play any of them on the day.
  • Learn to disagree without being disagreeable. Panels penalise both aggression and passivity.
  • Build a one-page current-affairs note per week covering banking, economy and one social issue.
  • Drill your PIQ, especially the ‘why SBI' answer and the switch from your academic background.

Common mistakes

  • Dominating the GE. Talking over others rarely helps.
  • Contributing nothing. A silent GE is a wasted GE.
  • Weak ‘why SBI' story. Panels have heard the ‘largest bank' line a thousand times.

  • Poor situational calls. Answer in three beats — immediate action, escalation path, the rule that guided you.

How is SBI PO's interview different from IBPS PO's?
SBI adds a Group Exercise before the interview and weights the whole stage more heavily — typically 25 per cent of the final score versus about 20 per cent for IBPS. The banking-awareness content overlap is significant, but SBI probes cultural fit and communication under group pressure much harder.
How should I answer ‘why SBI'?
Anchor in something concrete — the scale of exposure to different segments (retail, SME, agri, corporate), the international network, or a specific SBI initiative that appeals to you. Avoid pure size or salary framings; every candidate uses those and panels tune them out.
What role should I play in the Group Exercise?
Play the role the group needs. If nobody is starting, initiate. If people are talking over each other, summarise. If a good point is being missed, bring it in. Do not fake a role that does not suit you — panels can tell.
How much banking depth is expected?
More than IBPS but less than RBI Grade B. You should be comfortable with basic ratios, monetary policy stance, priority sector, NPAs, digital rails and SBI-specific products. Depth on any one area is fine; bluffing across all is not.
