DAF Questions: Your UPSC Interview Blueprint

The Detailed Application Form is the single most important document in your interview prep. Boards use it as a script, and roughly half the questions in most interviews trace back to it. Nothing on it is decorative — every hobby, every optional, every service preference, every home-district entry is a potential probe. This guide covers how to prepare the DAF and where boards drill deepest.

Why the DAF is your prep spine

Boards do not want to guess who you are. The DAF gives them a factual base — where you grew up, what you studied, what you have done, what you enjoy — from which they can probe judgement and honesty. That means every entry has to be defensible. If you cannot talk knowledgeably about your hobby for three minutes, do not list it. If you cannot name your home district's MP and MLA, do not treat it as a formality.

Where boards drill deepest

  • Service preferences: why IAS over IPS or IFS; why IRS/IRAS over IPS; why home cadre over insider or outsider.
  • Home district and state: economy, current schemes, one social issue, MP and MLA names, the district collector's known priorities.
  • Educational background: favourite subject, weakest grade and its reason, dissertation or major project.
  • Work experience: your specific role, what you learned, why you left.
  • Hobbies: the most drilled section — expect follow-ups to derivation depth.
  • Optional subject: at least one probe on a running debate in your optional.
  • Gaps: any year unaccounted for.

How to prepare DAF entries systematically

  • Print the DAF and write on the margin every likely follow-up for each entry. Aim for at least three per entry.
  • Answer each follow-up in writing first — one honest paragraph — then rehearse aloud.
  • Test yourself with a peer or a mentor. Ask them to keep drilling until you either defend or concede.
  • Update the answers weekly as new events happen — a scheme announcement in your home district changes the answer.

Common mistakes

  • Padded hobbies. ‘Reading books' with no favourite author is a red flag.
  • Unverifiable achievements. Do not list an award you cannot describe in detail.
  • Weak home-district answers. Boards drill this early.
  • Rehearsed service-preference answer. The most transparent kind.
  • Ignoring the optional. Even one embarrassing follow-up on your own optional is disproportionately costly.

Frequently asked

Can I change or update the DAF before the interview?
No. The DAF you submitted after Mains is what the board has. You can, however, update your working knowledge — new schemes, recent events, an award you received after submission — and mention updates naturally in your answers where relevant.
What if I listed a hobby I do not really pursue any more?
Own it and be honest — say you pursued it actively until college and have not had time since, but here is what you still know about it. Bluffing is worse than admitting a drift. Boards test hobbies precisely because dropped hobbies are common.
How much home-district depth is expected?
Enough to speak for two or three minutes on economy, demography, current issues, MP and MLA names, and the collector's known priorities. Boards use this as a proxy for whether you actually read about your own place; a vague answer here is a serious signal.
Should I match service preferences with cadre logic?
Yes. Boards notice inconsistencies — for example, an all-India-cadre-first ordering with a strong home-state emotional argument. Have a coherent story for the ordering, and be ready to defend it under polite pushback.
