AFCAT AFSB: Preparing for the Air Force Selection Board

AFCAT candidates report to an Air Force Selection Board for the same five-day OLQ assessment used by CDS and NDA, plus the Computerised Pilot Selection System for flying-branch aspirants. Recommendation depends on consistent OLQs across the psychologist, GTO and interviewing officer. AFSB format and PABT

Day 1 is screening (OIR + PPDT); days 2–4 cover the psychology battery, GTO series and personal interview; day 5 is the conference. Flying-branch candidates additionally clear the Computerised Pilot Selection System (CPSS) — a machine test of hand-eye coordination and instrument reading that cannot be prepared for through books. You get one attempt in a lifetime.

The Air Force is smaller than the Army and Navy, and the AFSB is candid about it. Assessors are looking for a specific temperament — cool, technically curious, comfortable with machines and altitude.

Personal interview themes

  • Motivation: why the Air Force, why flying vs technical vs ground duty, why not the Army or Navy.
  • Technical aptitude: basic aerodynamics, aircraft in current IAF inventory, difference between fourth and fifth generation, recent inductions.
  • Current affairs: last three to six months, with a defence and aerospace lean.
  • PIQ probes: family, school, hobbies, engineering project, work experience.
  • Situational: handling a subordinate who missed a pre-flight check; a colleague drinking before duty.

A focused prep plan

  • Read one basic aviation book — Rod Machado's or a standard IAF primer — for vocabulary.
  • Follow IAF and MoD press releases for six weeks before the AFSB.
  • Drill your PIQ aloud and write a one-page answer to every motivation question.
  • For CPSS, sleep well and stay calm; do not over-caffeinate. The test rewards steady inputs, not aggression.
  • Rehearse the personal interview out loud. A voice mock is useful because the IAF register is quieter and more precise than the Army equivalent, and hearing yourself back highlights where you are speaking too fast. Common mistakes

  • Faking flying interest. If your real preference is technical, say so. Assessors read through the pretence.
  • No aviation vocabulary. A pilot aspirant who cannot explain lift or drag looks unprepared.
  • Downplaying spectacles. Vision standards are strict for flying; do not hide medical facts.
  • Cliché lines. ‘Touching the skies with glory' is the motto, not an answer.
  • Ignoring the GTO ground. Interview alone cannot compensate for a passive group task performance.

Frequently asked

Is CPSS the same as PABT?
CPSS is the current name; PABT was the older term. It is a one-time computerised test of pilot aptitude. A candidate who attempts it and does not clear cannot try again for any flying entry in the IAF, Navy or Army Aviation, so treat it with respect.
Do I need engineering knowledge for the technical branch interview?
Yes, at a fundamentals level. Expect probes on your degree specialisation, final-year project and any workshop or internship. You do not need cutting-edge research knowledge; you need to defend what is on your degree transcript clearly.
How is AFSB different from Army SSB?
The framework is identical, but the culture is subtly different. AFSB assessors value calmness under technical pressure, precision of language and comfort with machines. Army SSB leans slightly more on physical robustness and small-unit leadership signals.
