Unlike a pure arithmetic quiz, a numerical reasoning test embeds numbers in realistic contexts: sales tables, financial summaries, exchange rates and performance dashboards. You interpret the data and choose the correct value from options.

  • Percentages and percentage change: the single most common theme, including reverse percentages.
  • Ratios and proportions: splitting totals, scaling recipes or budgets.
  • Rates: currency conversion, speed, productivity per hour.
  • Averages and weighted averages: where group sizes differ.
  • Multi-source reading: where the answer needs two charts or tabs combined.

Employers care less about your final number and more about whether you can be trusted to read a figure correctly and act on it. That is why the data is deliberately dressed in business context: they are simulating the judgement calls of the actual job, not setting a maths exam for its own sake.

Timing under pressure

Change is 37,500 over 250,000, equals 0.15, so 15%. The trap answer is often 37,500 shown as a raw difference, or the 115% figure mis-selected in a rush. Always convert the change relative to the original base, not the new one.

Weighted-average traps are common too. If a team of 3 averages 80 and a team of 7 averages 60, the combined average is not 70. It is (3 times 80 plus 7 times 60) over 10, equals (240 plus 420) over 10, equals 66. Reverse-percentage traps appear as well: if a price after a 20% discount is 480, the original is 480 divided by 0.8, equals 600, not 480 plus 20%.

How to practise effectively

Build the reflexes first: percentage change, reverse percentages, ratios and weighted averages. Do timed drills on just these until they are instant, because the test's difficulty is speed, not concept. Isolating each skill before combining them is far more efficient than grinding random full tests from day one.

Then take full-length practice tests to build stamina, and after each one categorise every error as misread, wrong method, or too slow. Fixing the dominant category lifts your score faster than random extra practice ever will.
