Data interpretation looks like maths but is really about reading fast and calculating slow-but-safe. Most candidates lose marks not to hard sums but to misreading an axis or a footnote. The examiner rewards the candidate who extracts the right numbers and estimates confidently. Because one chart feeds several questions, DI is often the highest-yield-per-minute section in the whole test once you learn to read it cleanly.
Read the title, axes, units and any footnote before touching a single question. One missed "figures in thousands" note can wreck an entire set, and it is the most common self-inflicted DI error.
The mindset shift that helps most candidates is treating DI as a reading-and-estimating exercise rather than an arithmetic marathon. Precision to the last decimal is rarely needed when options are far apart.
Suppose a bar chart shows revenue of 120, 150, 180 and 210 (in crores) across four years, and a question asks the percentage growth from year one to year four.
Growth is (210 minus 120) divided by 120, equals 90 over 120, equals 0.75, so 75%. Notice you never needed years two and three; DI questions routinely include decoy data to slow you down and tempt unnecessary calculation.
Now a pie-chart trap: if marketing is 18% of a 45-lakh budget, that is 0.18 times 45, roughly 8.1 lakh. Weak candidates read 18% and pick an option showing 18. Strong candidates always finish the conversion from share to value. A second classic trap is the average question that quietly needs a weighted average; if group sizes differ, never take a plain mean of the group averages.
Drill mental arithmetic separately from DI itself, because that is the true bottleneck. Memorise percentage-to-fraction conversions (12.5% equals one-eighth, 16.67% equals one-sixth), squares up to 30, and quick multiplication tables. These compound across every DI question you will ever face.
Practise full sets under a timer and, after each, log why you were slow: misreading, heavy calculation, or falling for a decoy. That diagnosis is more valuable than the raw score. Aim to solve a four-question set within a tight, fixed budget and review anything you overran.
Also practise the caselet type specifically, since building the table yourself adds reading time that surprises candidates who only trained on ready-made charts. Once the table is drawn, the maths is identical to a normal set.
For analyst and data roles, DI skill does not stop at the written test. Interviewers often show you a chart or a metric and ask you to interpret it out loud and recommend an action, which tests whether you can turn a number into a decision, not just find it.
