How to Write a Fresher Resume in India: The Complete Guide

Writing your first resume in India is both easier and harder than it seems. Easier because the expectations for 0–2 year candidates are calibrated appropriately. Harder because you have limited experience to work with — so every choice of structure, language, and content matters more. Most fresher resumes in India make the same 5–6 mistakes that can be fixed in under 2 hours. This guide walks you through building a strong first resume from scratch.

What Recruiters Expect From a Fresher Resume

For 0–2 year candidates, Indian recruiters are not looking for extensive work history. They are looking for:

• Academic performance — CGPA, institution, branch
• Relevant skills — technical tools, languages, platforms
• Evidence of initiative — projects, internships, certifications
• Communication ability — how well the resume is written and structured
• Alignment with the role — do your skills match what the JD requires?

The Right Format for a Fresher Resume in India

Length: 1 page. Strictly. Freshers should never exceed 1 page.

Section order for freshers:

1. Name + Contact (phone, email, LinkedIn URL)
2. Professional Summary (3 lines)
3. Education (reverse chronological — most recent first)
4. Skills (technical + tools)
5. Projects (2–4 best projects with tech stack and outcome)

Do not write “Seeking a challenging role in a growth-oriented organisation.” That is the most common and most useless summary line in Indian fresher resumes.

Write instead: “[Degree] graduate from [Institution] with strong skills in [2–3 relevant areas]. Built [specific project]. Seeking [specific role] where I can [brief contribution goal].”

Education

List your most recent degree first. Include:

• Degree + Specialisation
• Institution name
• Graduation year
• CGPA or percentage (if above 7.0 CGPA or 65% — include it; if below, it is optional)
• Relevant coursework (optional — only if directly relevant to the target role)

Skills Section

Organise by category. Do NOT list MS Word or PowerPoint as skills unless they are specifically relevant to the role. For tech roles:

• Programming Languages: Python, Java, C++

• Cloud: AWS (basic), GCP (basic)

Projects Section (Most Important for Freshers)

• Tech stack — list the specific tools and languages used
• Problem solved — 1 line on what problem it addressed
• Outcome — a number if possible (accuracy %, users served, transactions processed, speed improvement)

• Company name + city
• Role title
• Dates
• 2–3 bullets: what you did + what tech + outcome

If no internship: substitute with a freelance project or a significant academic contribution.

Common Fresher Resume Mistakes in India
