How to Fix Your Resume in 30 Minutes (India Edition)

Most resume problems are not complex — they’re predictable. The same 10 mistakes appear in 80% of Indian resumes, and fixing them is faster than most people think. This guide gives you a 30-minute, step-by-step audit and fix protocol. Open your resume, work through each section with this guide, and you’ll have a meaningfully better document before the hour is out.

The 30-Minute Resume Fix Protocol

What you’ll need: Your current resume open, 30 minutes of focus, a free tool like Jobscan or Hemingway App

MINUTES 0–5: Header and Contact Information Audit

Check:

• [ ] Is your email professional? ([email protected] ✓; [email protected] ✗)
• [ ] Is your phone number correct? (Test it — you’d be surprised)
• [ ] Have you included your LinkedIn URL? (Make it custom: linkedin.com/in/priyasharma)
• [ ] Have you included your GitHub, portfolio, or relevant profile link?
• [ ] Is your city listed? (Just city is enough — full address is unnecessary)
• [ ] Is there a professional photo if required? (PSU/government: yes; private sector: not needed)

Common India fix: Remove date of birth, gender, marital status, and father’s name unless the application specifically requires them.

MINUTES 5–10: Career Summary / Objective

The test: Read your summary. Does it tell a recruiter exactly what role you want and your top 2–3 qualifications in under 4 lines?

Common problems and fixes:

No summary section at all	Add 3 lines — role, top skills, best achievement
Summary that’s identical to your first job description	Rewrite to reflect your full career story, not one job
Summary longer than 4 lines	Cut mercilessly — if it can’t be said in 4 lines, it won’t be read

5-minute fix template:

> “[Target role] professional with [X years] in [domain], specialising in [Skill 1] and [Skill 2]. [One achievement with a number]. Seeking [specific type of role] at [company type] in [city/remote].”

MINUTES 10–18: Work Experience Bullets

This is where the most value is and the most time is wasted. Work through each job entry:

Step 1: Remove every bullet that starts with “Responsible for” — rewrite with an action verb.

Step 2: Add a number to every bullet that currently has none.

Step 3: Cut bullets that are obvious job duties (not achievements).

> “Attended daily standups” — Delete.

> “Used Microsoft Office for documentation” — Delete.

> “Communicated with stakeholders” — Delete or rewrite with specific outcome.

Step 4: Reorder — most impressive bullet first per job.

MINUTES 18–22: Skills Section Audit

Check:

• [ ] Is every skill genuinely yours? (Remove anything you’d struggle to discuss in an interview)
• [ ] Are you using the exact terms recruiters search? (MS Excel not just Excel; Python 3 not just Python)
• [ ] Have you removed outdated or irrelevant skills? (MS Paint, Tally if you’re in tech, basic Word/Excel for senior roles)
• [ ] Are you missing any keywords from the job descriptions you’re targeting?

5-Minute ATS check: Copy-paste the job description of your target role into Jobscan.co alongside your resume. It’ll show you keyword gaps. Add the missing keywords you genuinely have.

MINUTES 22–26: Education Section

Check:

• [ ] Most recent education listed first
• [ ] CGPA included if above 7.0; omit if below 6.5 (private sector)
• [ ] Relevant coursework listed for freshers (2–3 subjects relevant to the target role)
• [ ] No high school listed if you have a degree and more than 2 years of experience
• [ ] Certifications listed here or in a separate section: include the issuer and year

MINUTES 26–30: Formatting and Final Check

Format:

• [ ] Font: Calibri, Arial, or Garamond (11pt body, 13–14pt name)
• [ ] Consistent bullet style throughout
• [ ] Margins: 0.5″–0.75″ all sides
• [ ] No coloured text (black only for ATS compatibility)
• [ ] No text boxes, tables in headers/footers, or columns (ATS cannot read them)
• [ ] File saved as PDF (not Word, unless specifically requested)
• [ ] Filename: FirstName-LastName-Resume.pdf (not resume_final_v3_updated.pdf)

Spelling and grammar:

• [ ] Run through Grammarly (free version)
• [ ] Read the resume backwards — catches errors your brain auto-corrects forward

Length:

• [ ] Fresher / under 2 years: 1 page maximum
• [ ] 2–8 years experience: 1.5–2 pages
• [ ] 8+ years experience: 2–3 pages maximum

Once your resume is in the shape described above, mirror the same wording in your Naukri Jobs profile — recruiters on that portal search by exact skill and city, so the phrasing you use there decides who calls you.
