Mercer Mettl OA: how the test works and how to practise

If TCS iON, LTIMindtree, Wipro, Cognizant, ITC or one of the many Indian banks is hiring you, your OA is almost certainly on Mercer Mettl. It is an India-native platform that runs adaptive tests with strict lockdown proctoring, section-wise cut-offs, and dozens of domain-specific variants. This page explains what to expect from the test you have been scheduled for and how to spend your remaining days.

The sections you will actually see

Mettl tests are modular. Your employer picks a subset from a fixed catalogue, so the exact combination varies, but the common ones are:

  • Quantitative aptitude — arithmetic, percentages, ratios, time-and-work, DI. Usually 15 to 25 questions in 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Logical reasoning — series, blood relations, coding-decoding, syllogisms.
  • Verbal ability — reading comprehension, error spotting, para-jumbles.
  • Data interpretation — tables, pie charts, caselets.
  • Domain — coding (for IT), banking awareness (for BFSI), functional MCQs (for FMCG or manufacturing).

Each section usually has its own timer that starts when you enter and cannot be paused. You cannot return to a section once submitted.

Adaptive difficulty and section-wise cut-offs

Many Mettl variants use adaptive scoring — a correct answer raises the difficulty of the next question and its point value; a wrong answer drops both. That means your final score is not simply correct minus wrong. Two candidates with the same number correct can score very differently.

Almost every recruiter using Mettl sets per-section cut-offs as well as an overall cut-off. Aceing quant while flunking verbal will still eliminate you. Distribute your attempts.

Proctoring: webcam, lockdown and the flag system

Mettl’s SecureBrowser or lockdown extension disables copy-paste, screenshots, second monitors, alt-tab and browser DevTools. Your webcam feed is recorded and reviewed by AI; suspicious frames (looking away for long stretches, someone else in view, phones in shot) trigger flags on your report.

  • A single warning almost never terminates a test.
  • Three to five warnings typically auto-submit the section.
  • The webcam must stay on for the entire test. Do the exam in a private, well-lit room, facing the light source.

What score you actually need

Cut-offs are set per drive and never officially published. Based on candidate-reported data, the pattern is broadly:

  • Service companies (TCS iON-style): 60-65 percent overall, with each section above 50.
  • Mid-tier IT and BFSI: 70-75 percent overall.
  • Product companies using the Mettl coding assessment: one working solution plus solid MCQs.

Do not aim for the cut-off. Aim well above it — the shortlist is often ranked, not just filtered.

A 7-day Mettl plan

  • Day 1: full mock in the exact section format your recruiter has confirmed.
  • Day 2: quant — one hour of arithmetic, one hour of DI.
  • Day 3: logical reasoning — series, blood relations, coding-decoding.
  • Day 4: verbal — three RCs and one hour of error spotting.
  • Day 5: your domain module. For coding, five easy and two medium problems.
  • Day 6: a second full mock. Check pacing, not just accuracy.
  • Day 7: set up your webcam, close every unrelated app, and rest.

Frequently asked

Can I go back to a Mercer Mettl section after submitting it?
No. Every section has its own timer and once you submit or the timer expires, that section is locked. Do not rush through hoping to return — pace yourself so each section is answered as fully as possible before moving on.
Does Mettl auto-submit if I look away from the webcam?
It flags the frame in the proctoring report. One or two glances rarely matter, but repeated or prolonged deviations, or another face appearing, will raise warnings and can auto-submit the section after several strikes. Sit still and look at the screen.
Is there negative marking on Mercer Mettl tests?
It depends entirely on the recruiter’s template. Some enable negative marking of 0.25 or 0.5 per wrong answer; others do not. Check the instructions page carefully — it is shown before the timer starts and you have as long as you like to read it.
What browser does Mettl SecureBrowser support?
SecureBrowser is a standalone download that works on Windows and macOS. You install it in advance, log in with the credentials the recruiter mailed you, and it launches the test in a locked window. Test the install a day early — a last-minute install failure is a real risk.
Are Mettl coding questions like LeetCode?
Similar in flavour but usually shorter, with less algorithmic depth than a competitive-programming site. Expect one easy and one medium problem in a typical services-company Mettl coding round, with hidden test cases and partial credit.
