iMocha OA: skills-first assessment and how to prepare

An iMocha assessment bundles multiple question types into a single, timed skill test. A typical mid-level Java assessment, for example, might include:

• 25 to 40 MCQs on language features, JVM internals, collections, threading, Spring.
• 1 or 2 coding problems executed in the browser IDE, scored on hidden test cases.
• A simulation — a snippet of buggy code to fix, or a small SQL schema to query.
• Occasionally a project-style task where you extend a small piece of starter code.

The total time is usually 60 to 90 minutes and the timer is unified — you allocate it across sections. Each question has a point weight, and the report the recruiter sees breaks your score down by sub-skill.

iMocha’s catalogue is deep on tools rather than algorithms. Where HackerRank asks about arrays and graphs, iMocha asks about Spring bean scopes, Salesforce triggers, Ansible playbooks or ABAP performance tuning. That is why it is used for lateral and experienced hiring far more than fresher screening.

The upside for you is that the questions map directly to what you already do at work. The downside is that shallow surface knowledge shows immediately — the MCQs are written to distinguish someone who has used a tool for a year from someone who has read a tutorial.

Because the timer is unified, the biggest mistake candidates make is spending 40 minutes on the two coding problems and rushing the last 30 MCQs. A better approach:

• Read the section counts up front. Divide time by point weight, not by section length.
• Do the MCQs first if they carry equal weight — they are faster to score.
• Reserve the last 10 minutes as a review pass. iMocha lets you flag and revisit within the test.
• Do not obsess over one hard MCQ. Guess, flag it, move on.

Recruiters set the passing threshold per role. Broadly:

• 60-65 percent is a common services-company screening pass for mid-level skill tests.
• 75 percent or higher is what product-team lateral hiring usually wants.
• The sub-skill breakdown also matters. Scoring 80 overall but 20 on Spring Security can still eliminate you for a security-heavy role.

Look at the invite email carefully — some iMocha assessments list the specific sub-skills. Prioritise those.

• Day 1: read the invite carefully. List every named sub-skill.
• Day 2: revise fundamentals for the top three sub-skills — one hour each.
• Day 3: do 40 MCQs on the primary skill from any reputable question bank.
• Day 4: two coding problems in the exact language the test uses. Timed.
• Day 5: one debugging or fix-the-bug exercise in your skill area.
• Day 6: a mixed mock — MCQs plus one coding plus one simulation, 90 minutes total.
• Day 7: revise your own error log. Test your webcam and quiet room setup.
