Cognizant Data Analyst interview preparation, step by step

For analyst and associate-analyst roles Cognizant typically opens with an online assessment (quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, verbal ability and a data-interpretation block), sometimes with a communication test. That is followed by a technical interview focused on SQL, Excel and analytical reasoning, and an HR round.

The underlying signal is practicality: given a business question, can you fetch the right data, verify it, and communicate a clear answer? Because Cognizant analysts work in client-facing delivery teams, how you explain a result matters as much as getting it.

SQL is central. Practise JOINs across multiple tables, GROUP BY with HAVING, subqueries, and window functions (ROW_NUMBER, RANK, LAG/LEAD, running totals). A common ask: return the top N customers by spend per city, or the month-on-month change in a metric. Narrate your logic while you write. Most Cognizant Data Analyst / Data Science Jobs at this level assume fluency in exactly the SQL and case-reasoning patterns above, so drilling them pays off directly.

Excel: lookups (VLOOKUP, INDEX-MATCH, XLOOKUP), pivot tables, SUMIFS/COUNTIFS, and data-cleaning steps for duplicates and inconsistent formats.

Statistics and reasoning: mean versus median, percentiles, correlation versus causation, and how to spot outliers. You might be asked to interpret a chart or explain what could cause a sudden metric drop.

• Strong: checks the grain of the data, states an assumption, and flags one limitation.
• Weak: writes a query without confirming what a row represents, or gives a definition with no example.

Cognizant often adds a light case: a scenario such as rising customer churn or a dip in conversions, and asks how you would investigate. Interviewers reward structure. Restate the question, list the data you need, choose the metric, segment the problem, and consider confounders before concluding.

Your projects come up too. Be ready to explain a dashboard you built, the tool (Power BI, Tableau or Excel), the decision it informed, and one insight that changed a stakeholder's mind. Keep it in plain language.
