BCG case interviews test how you think through an ambiguous business problem, with a style that leaves more room for you to shape the case than some peers. You will need clean structuring, sound business judgement, quick maths and a clear recommendation, plus strong fit answers. This page covers the BCG loop, the case types, and how to practise a live case aloud.

You usually face two to three interviews per round across one or two rounds, each combining a case with fit or experience questions. Some candidates also complete BCG's online case or chatbot-style assessment earlier in the funnel.
BCG wants creative but rigorous problem solvers who can own a problem, apply judgement, and communicate an answer with confidence and warmth.
BCG cases cover profitability, growth, market entry, pricing and operations, often with a strategic or slightly open-ended flavour. Because you drive more of the case, your opening structure matters:
On a growth case, a strong candidate separates organic versus inorganic levers, existing versus new customers, and volume versus price, then picks the most promising branch and tests it with data. A weak candidate produces an unstructured list or waits passively for the interviewer to lead.
Expect quantitative work - breakevens, ROI, market sizing, margin maths - done cleanly by hand. Walk through your setup, keep figures round, and always interpret what the number means for the client. BCG frequently uses exhibits; practise pulling the one insight that moves the case rather than narrating every data point.
Business judgement is a BCG signature. Beyond the maths, they want to hear a point of view: which option you would recommend, what could go wrong, and how you would de-risk it. Candidates who only crunch numbers without a commercial opinion tend to underperform here, even when their arithmetic is flawless.
BCG's fit questions are not a formality. Interviewers explore why consulting, why BCG over its rivals, and how you behave in a team - leadership shown, a conflict handled, a failure owned. Because BCG prizes collaboration, they listen for whether you bring people with you rather than steamrolling them.
Prepare four to six STAR stories with specific, quantified outcomes, and rehearse a genuine why-BCG that goes beyond prestige - a practice area, a type of client, or the firm's culture that actually draws you. Authenticity reads clearly in this round, and rehearsed-sounding platitudes do not.
Because BCG hands you more of the wheel, a frequent stumble is going quiet mid-case while you think - the interviewer loses your thread and cannot help you. Practise narrating your reasoning continuously, even the dead ends, so the conversation stays shared. Another BCG-specific habit worth building is creativity within rigour: when a case opens up, brainstorm a few genuinely different levers before committing, then prioritise. Interviewers notice candidates who generate options rather than marching down the first branch that comes to mind, then narrow with judgement. It also helps to remember that BCG is reading for someone a client would enjoy working with, so warmth and clear delivery are not optional extras - they are part of the score.
