AMCAT preparation: syllabus, scoring and cut-offs by role

AMCAT is a paid, self-scheduled test from Aspiring Minds that around 200 Indian employers subscribe to as a screening filter. The four modules — and the one you pick

Every AMCAT sitting includes three compulsory modules and one domain module of your choice.

  • English comprehension — vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension. 18 questions, 20 minutes.
  • Quantitative ability — arithmetic, algebra, basic geometry, DI. 16 questions, 16 minutes.
  • Logical ability — series, syllogisms, deductive and inductive reasoning. 14 questions, 16 minutes.
  • Domain (choice of): Computer Programming, Automata (coding), Financial Accounting, Statistics, Electronics, Mechanical, and around 15 others.

Choose your domain based on the role you are applying to. IT services roles almost always want Computer Programming plus Automata. Analytics roles look for Statistics.

Adaptive scoring and score ranges

AMCAT is computer-adaptive within each module. Every module is scored on a scale of roughly 100 to 900, with the mean around 500 and higher scores indicating a rarer performance. The report a recruiter sees shows your module scores, your percentile against a national comparison group, and an employability tag.

  • Below 400: below the screening bar for most tech roles.
  • 500-600: opens the majority of IT services and BPO doors.
  • 600-700: product companies and analytics roles start to be reachable.
  • 700+: a rare band that acts as a positive filter, not a screening line.

How recruiters actually see and use your score

Your AMCAT score is available on the Aspiring Minds recruiter dashboard for 12 months. Employers filter their candidate pool by module and by cut-off, then invite matches. That means:

  • A good AMCAT triggers inbound interview requests. You do not have to apply.
  • A weak score is not visible unless you send your report yourself, so a low AMCAT does not actively hurt you — but you cannot retake at will (30-day cooldown, and a paid re-book).
  • Recruiters see the module breakdown. Balanced scores across all three plus a strong domain read better than an uneven profile.

Industry cut-offs — the honest picture

Aspiring Minds does not publish company-level cut-offs and the numbers below are candidate-reported patterns, not guarantees.

  • Top-tier IT services (Accenture, Cognizant, Wipro): around 500-550 in each of English, Quant and Logical, plus 500+ in Computer Programming.
  • Analytics and consulting entry roles: 600+ in Quant and Logical, 550+ in English.
  • Banking and BPO: 450+ in English is often the leading filter.

These shift over time and by hiring season. Aim for 600+ across every module and you will comfortably clear most.

A 7-day AMCAT plan

  • Day 1: a full-length AMCAT mock so you feel the exact time pressure.
  • Day 2: Quant — arithmetic and DI, 40 problems.
  • Day 3: Logical — series, syllogisms, blood relations, 30 problems.

What score do I need on AMCAT for TCS or Wipro?
There is no officially published cut-off, but candidate-reported patterns suggest around 500 to 550 in each of English, Quantitative and Logical, plus a 500+ in Computer Programming for tech roles. Aim above that band to comfortably clear rather than scrape past.
How long is my AMCAT score valid?
Twelve months from the date of the sitting. During that period, subscribing recruiters can search for your profile and invite you to interview directly. A single good AMCAT can produce interview calls for many months, which is why it is worth preparing properly.
Can I retake AMCAT if I score poorly?
Yes, after a 30-day cooldown, and you have to pay for each fresh attempt. The new score replaces the old one on your profile, so only retake when you are confident you will do meaningfully better — not just marginally.
Is AMCAT harder than campus placement tests?
The individual questions are similar in difficulty, but AMCAT’s adaptive engine and tight per-module timers make the experience feel harder. Practising with strict section timers is more important than doing thousands of untimed questions.
Do I need to prepare Automata for AMCAT?
Only if you are targeting technology roles or your employer specifically requires it. Automata is a coding module with a small IDE that runs your code against test cases. It is worth an extra prep day if any role you want lists it as required.
