How to Crack a Consulting Interview in India: McKinsey, BCG, Deloitte, and Big 4

Consulting is among the most selective and best-paying career tracks in India. McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Deloitte, EY, KPMG, and PwC all recruit heavily from IIMs, ISB, and top engineering colleges — but also increasingly from lateral industry hiring. The interview process is notoriously rigorous: multiple rounds, case studies, group discussions, and personality fit assessments. This guide tells you exactly what to expect and how to prepare.

The Consulting Interview Structure

Consulting interviews in India typically have 3–5 rounds:

RoundFormatWhat Is Assessed

The Case Interview: What It Is and How to Approach It

The case interview is the defining element of consulting recruitment. You are given a business problem and asked to solve it on the spot, talking through your thinking aloud.

Common case types:

The 4-Step Case Framework:

Step 1 – Clarify: Ask 2–3 clarifying questions before jumping in. Confirm the objective and any constraints. Once you feel ready, browse relevant roles on LinkedIn Jobs India and apply the same preparation to real openings.

Step 2 – Structure: Build a logical framework. Common frameworks: Profitability (Revenue vs. Cost), Porter’s 5 Forces, 4Cs (Customer, Company, Competition, Cost), or a custom issue tree.

Step 3 – Analyse: Work through each branch of your framework. Do quick mental math out loud. Ask for data when needed.

Step 4 – Synthesise: Summarise your findings, state a clear recommendation, and identify risks and next steps.

Personal Experience Interview (PEI): How to Prepare

PEI questions in consulting test your experiences against core consulting competencies. The most common:

Preparation method:

  1. Build a “story bank” of 5–7 experiences from your career or MBA projects
  2. Map each story to multiple competencies (one story can answer multiple questions)
  3. Use the SPAR format: Situation → Problem → Action → Result
  4. Quantify every result (revenue impact, time saved, team size, market size)
  5. Make each story specific to India where possible (Indian company, Indian market, Indian team)
